Airlines across the U.S. began canceling flights as the longest government shutdown in history snarls up air travel and forces thousands of passengers to change their travel plans.

The casualties are believed to include Captain Richard Wartenberg, First Officer Lee Truitt and International Relief Officer Captain Dana Diamond, UPS said in a statement. 

U.S. airlines began canceling hundreds of flights Nov. 6 due to the Federal Aviation Administration’s order to reduce traffic at the country’s busiest airports starting Nov. 7.

“We’re just about flat, which tells us, we’re leveling off and we’re starting to live in that new norm,” says Scott Cornell, a crime and theft specialist at Travelers.

“The safety of our state is our top priority, and we’ll keep working with our federal partners to keep Hoosiers — and Americans — safe,” Gov. Mike Braun said.

Flights at major U.S. hubs from New York to Los Angeles will be reduced starting Nov. 7 as the FAA faces severe air traffic controller staffing shortages.

“We are going to take a hard look at those individuals and there will be serious consequences for them,” Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said of lax driver training schools.

The U.S. will cut flight capacity by 10% at 40 high-volume markets across the country, as travelers continue to face flight disruptions due to an uptick in air traffic controller absences.

The UPS cargo plane crash on Nov. 4 at the company’s global aviation hub in Kentucky, which killed at least 12, will temporarily disrupt the supply chain and result in some shipping delays.
