’s Intellipark electronic parking brake (EPB) system will be made available for all and Class 8 and medium-duty models, the truck manufacturers said.
Paccar Inc. subsidiaries Kenworth Truck Co. and Peterbilt Motors Co, said the option of replacing traditional red-and-yellow push-pull knobs is intended to help drivers with many stops and starts.
“The electronic parking brake system brings a new level of redundancy, simplicity and assurance to our customers,” said Kevin Haygood, Kenworth’s assistant general manager for sales and marketing.
“With EPB, drivers can count on an added layer of protection that helps to mitigate rollaway incidents. While this technology is beneficial for any customer, it’s particularly useful in vocational, [pickup-and-delivery], and other applications that require drivers to enter and exit the cab numerous times per day,” Haygood added.

“Safety is a core value and part of Peterbilt’s culture,” said Erik Johnson, Peterbilt assistant general manager, sales and marketing. “The electronic parking brake advanced functions and custom interlocks are the latest in several Peterbilt standard and optional driver-assistance features available to assist our customers in mitigating potential driving risks.”
Intellipark Includes
- Rollaway mitigation: Automatic application of parking brakes if a driver exits the vehicle without engaging the parking brake.
- Auto Trailer brake disengagement: Trailer brakes release automatically when tractor movement is detected.
- Smart Unpark: Interlocks that confirm the vehicle is ready to be parked or moving again through sensors that monitor door position, seat belt status and vehicle movement.
Kenworth noted that the design maintains recognizable symbols while simplifying operation, eliminating the “sting” usually associated with manual valves.
The system also is compatible with Kenworth’s March announcement of advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) packages for the Kirkland, Wash.-based manufacturer’s flagship T680 tractor.
Kenworth offers three ADAS packages for the T680: ADAS, ADAS Pro and ADAS Premier.

All the packages include the latest version of the Bendix Fusion system, which offers updated adaptive cruise control, a pedestrian autonomous emergency braking feature plus high-beam assist. The latter automatically deactivates high beams based on conditions.
The top-end Premier package also includes Kenworth’s DigitalVision mirrors.
