Union Pacific wants to buy Norfolk Southern in an $85 billion deal that would create the first transcontinental railroad.  That deal faces a lengthy review by the Surface Transportation Board.

CEO Steve Angel, without promising a merger, said he would consider any opportunities that make sense for shareholders. He vowed to focus on making CSX the best-performing railroad.

Norfolk Southern’s quarterly profits were again inflated by insurance payments related to its disastrous 2023 derailment in Ohio, but even without that, the railroad’s profits grew.
