The Future of Shipping

  • Researchers at Texas A&M Transportation Institute have developed an autonomous freight shuttle to carry truck trailers or containers on a dedicated elevated guideway to relieve congestion and reduce emissions at ports and border crossings.
  • Adidas is opening the first Speedfactory outside Germany in Atlanta in 2017. The facility will use robots to make custom footwear.
  • Hyperloop One and port operator DP World Group are exploring the potential for moving cargo at high speed through a tube that could be deployed underwater to ease congestion at the Jebel Ali port in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Studies are also under way for similar applications in Russia, Finland and Sweden, plus the Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach, California, in the United States. Hyperloop is also working with Deutsche Bahn in Germany to develop an “innovation train” for moving people and cargo.
  • Industrial Networks is developing a rail automation drone to autonomously scan railcars, eliminating the need to manually walk though rail yards to collect data.
  • Rolls Royce is investigating the potential for remote-controlled cargo ships as early as 2020. The vessels would be outfitted with sensors that allow it to be dispatched anywhere on earth without a crew onboard.
  • Savi Technology’s IoT-enabled seal lock master can be attached to any trailer or container and makes it possible to track goods in transit anywhere in the world.
  • CSL Group operates the largest fleet of self-unloading ships in the world. The vessels use gravity to release cargo onto conveyor belts through gates at the bottom of the vessel’s cargo holds.
  • A new trailer dolly from Silver Eagle Manufacturing automatically adjusts the gap between trailers based on speed to reduce aerodynamic drag and improve fuel efficiency. A module produced by Purkeys is used to control the movement and logic of the system.
  • Pasha Stevedoring and Terminals and the Port of Los
Angeles are conducting a demonstration of zero and near-zero emissions technologies using electric-powered vehicles and cargo-handling equipment and plugin shore power for ships at berth.
