Leading heavy-duty equipment suppliers said soft demand for their products in North America weakened third-quarter results.

Orders for Class 8 trucks in October reached 13,900, according to ACT Research Co.’s initial findings, which will be revised if necessary later in the month.

Trailer manufacturer Wabash National Corp. reported third-quarter net income edged up 3% to $33 million, or 51 cents per share, compared with $32 million, or 47 cents, in the period ended Sept. 30.

Engine manufacturer Cummins Inc. reported net income for the third quarter ended Oct. 2 fell to $289 million, or $1.72 per share, compared with $380 million, or $2.14, in the 2015 period, pointing to the weaker North American truck engine market, among other factors.

Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems said it has begun to produce driver control modules, or DCMs, built for Navistar Inc. on an advanced new assembly line at its Acuña, Mexico, manufacturing campus, in which it recently invested $4.6 million.

To slow the speed of the engine at cruise — called downspeeding, in which every 100 rpm slowed equates to 1% fuel savings — axle ratios are getting numerically lower. To wring the most miles from a gallon of fuel, some fleets are increasingly spec’ing direct-drive instead of overdrive transmissions, which is driving the trend to lower numerical final drive ratios.
