An anticipated jump in Class 8 truck sales ahead of the arrival of stricter emissions standards might not start until 2026, the CEO of the parent company of International Motors said March 10.

International Motors sold 23,800 trucks and buses in the fourth quarter of 2024, a 15% increase compared with 20,700 vehicles in the year-earlier period, parent company Traton said Jan. 14.

Sales at International soared in the most recent quarter after the truck and bus maker was able to clear a large part of a backlog of vehicles missing their mirrors.

Traton SE is targeting slightly higher returns in the coming five years by expanding in North America and selling more higher-priced electric trucks.

Traton’s profits rose in Q2 2024 as higher prices and South American demand trumped a slump in truck sales for Navistar’s International Trucks brand due to a shortage of mirrors.

Navistar truck and bus sales in the second quarter of 2024 slumped 31% year-over-year, partly as a result of a shortage of truck mirrors, parent company Traton said July 10.

Volkswagen AG is exploring the sale of as much as $1.1 billion of stock in Traton SE, taking advantage of the truck maker’s surging price to increase the number of shares available for trading.
