Truck tonnage increased on both a sequential and year-over-year basis in September, recording a 2021 high mark amid an environment where a shortage of drivers and trucks is keeping rigs fully loaded on most runs, American Trucking Associations reported Oct. 19.

Truck tonnage in August notched its first sequential monthly gain in five months, and dipped just slightly on a year-over-year basis, American Trucking Associations said.

Truck tonnage in July declined 2.9% when measured against the same month in 2020, according to American Trucking Associations’ For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index.

Truck tonnage rose 3.7% in May compared with year-ago levels and is pacing well against comparisons to the early months of the coronavirus pandemic, according to American Trucking Associations.

Truck tonnage in March declined on an annual and month-to-month basis, but the year-ago decline is up against comparisons to the first month that the COVID-19 pandemic gripped the nation, said American Trucking Associations Chief Economist Bob Costello in the federation’s monthly For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index release.

Severe winter weather took a toll on truck tonnage in February, according to American Trucking Associations.

January truck tonnage fell 2.1% compared with year-ago levels, but ticked up 1.4% over December 2020 — a continuation of several months’ worth of sequential gains, American Trucking Associations announced.

Trucking closed the tumultuous year of 2020 on an upswing, as truck tonnage in December rose a seasonally adjusted 2.3% year-over-year and jumped 7.4% compared with November in the strongest month-over-month gain since summer, American Trucking Associations reported.

Truck tonnage in November declined a seasonally adjusted 3.8%, marking the eighth consecutive month of year-over-year declines, American Trucking Associations said Dec. 22. However, the ATA For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index increased 3.7% in November after falling 5% in October when measured month-to-month.

Truck tonnage in October declined a seasonally adjusted 8.7% when compared with year-ago levels, American Trucking Associations said Nov. 24.
