Truck tonnage slipped in November as the industry’s freight recession lingers, but conditions are poised to ease heading into next year, American Trucking Associations said Dec. 19.

Truck tonnage on an annual basis declined for an eighth consecutive month in October but improved slightly on a month-to-month basis, according to American Trucking Associations.

Truck tonnage slumped 4.1% in September compared with year-ago levels, the steepest annual drop in nearly three years and an indication that the U.S. freight market remains turbulent.

Truck tonnage in August declined 2.3% compared with year-ago levels but inched up sequentially for the second consecutive month.

Truck tonnage in July declined by 3% compared with the same month in 2022, the fifth consecutive year-over-year decline and an indication that softness in the freight market persists.
