Truckload carrier USA Truck said it will fit almost all of its trailers with a new tracking system.

North American rail freight volumes, led by intermodal, climbed out of the recession at a brisk pace in 2010, posting an  11% year-over-year growth rate that was the fastest pace in at least 50 years.

Fueled by growth in dry vans, net trailer orders in the United States reached a two-year high in November of 21,314 units, ACT Research reported.

Booming dry-van sales led to a surge in U.S. trailer registrations in the third quarter, as buyers registered 35% more new trailers than in the corresponding period of last year, R.L. Polk & Co. reported.

Trailer Bridge Inc.’s third-quarter income fell to $6,876, or zero cents per share, from $1.7 million, or 14 cents, a year ago.

Trailer manufacturer Wabash National Corp. late Tuesday reported a third-quarter loss of $1.9 million, or 3 cents per share, compared with a loss of $66.4 million, or $2.23, a year ago.

New building techniques and innovative materials are helping to make trailers, especially dry vans and reefers, lighter, more fuel efficient and better at fighting corrosion, manufacturers said.

Carlisle Companies said Tuesday it sold its Trail King specialty trailer business, but did not identify the buyer or sale price.

Orders for new commercial trailers jumped 55% in August over the comparable month last year, and new orders for the year to date are now 71% above the first eight months of 2009, ACT Research Co. reported.
