Building on a surge of replacement demand that began last year, trailer manufacturers received orders for 21,990 new units in February — a 105% year-over-year increase.

Trailer Bridge Inc. reported a fourth-quarter loss of $2.9 million, or 24 cents per share, compared with a profit of $1 million, or 8 cents, a year ago.

The U.S. Supreme Court last week directed a lower court to reconsider a claim by freight railroad CSX Transportation Inc. that the Alabama fuel tax it pays is discriminatory because truckers are exempt from the same tax.

The freight-trailer industry rebounded sharply during 2010, with orders more than doubling to 166,500 and shipments rising 52% over 2009 to 119,900 units, ACT Research Co. reported.

Norfolk Southern Corp.’s fourth-quarter and annual net income rose from the same periods a year earlier and it said it was boosting its quarterly dividend.

Canadian freight railroad Canadian Pacific’s fourth-quarter net income increased 27.1% to C$185.8 million, or C$1.09 per share, from C$146.2 million, or 87 cents, a year earlier.

Canadian National Railway Co. said its fourth-quarter net income fell 13.6% to C$503 million, or C$1.08 per share, from C$582 million or $1.23 per share, a year earlier.

CSX Corp. said Monday its fourth-quarter profit jumped 42% on higher shipments from auto manufacturers and other industrial shippers.
