Navistar International Corp. last week reported net income for its fiscal second quarter jumped 72% and predicted sharp increases in production, sales and profits during the second half of the year.

Navistar International Corp. said Tuesday its fiscal second-quarter profit rose from a year ago as its truck segment’s sales improved.

Truck and engine maker Navistar Inc. has taken a new tack in its drive to offer new motors, joining a company that had developed a radical design that it says offers fuel efficiency and weight improvements.

Truck and engine maker Navistar Inc. said it has won regulatory approval for its 15-liter power plant, which it will unveil later this month at the Mid-America Trucking Show, and that it has submitted documents to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resources Board for a 13-liter engine that meets nitrogen oxide limits without the use of emission credits.

Navistar International Corp. Wednesday reported a loss for its fiscal first quarter but said the period was profitable excluding integration costs.

Navistar International Corp. has reached a development agreement with EcoMotors International to help commercialize the engine maker’s “opposed-piston, opposed-cylinder” engine technology.

An executive with Navistar Inc. said the company has received orders for nearly 50,000 International trucks with its 2010-compliant MaxxForce engines and already has shipped 26,000 of them to customers.

Navistar International Corp. boosted its profit forecast, saying it would earn $388 million to $465 million, or $5 to $6 per share, excluding some items, for its fiscal year that ends Oct. 31.
