Secretary Sean Duffy is turning up the heat on California after another truck driver holding a non-domiciled CDL issued by the state was involved in a fatal crash. But California is pushing back.

A truck driver accused of being under the influence and causing a fiery crash that killed three people on a California freeway is in the country illegally, U.S. ������ýland Security officials said.

“Teamwork across state lines is important to keep America’s roadways safe,” Nebraska State Police Capt. Martin Denton, of carrier enforcement, said Oct. 14.

The allegations against the world’s most valuable automaker stem from a middle of the night crash in November 2024 on a residential street in the San Francisco suburb of Piedmont.

The legislation is particularly significant for Arizona's trucking industry, which faces an increasing number of lawsuits often backed by third-party funding.

“If you come through these inspection stations and you are an illegal or breaking the law you will be handed over to our local or federal law enforcement partners,” a Florida official said.

An undocumented truck driver who obtained CDLs from two states was involved in a Florida crash that killed three people, prompting a federal investigation.

Inspectors have quietly gathered data on truck driver personal conveyance time and are making plans to soon ask regulators to limit the use of conveyance time to two hours.
