Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe welcomed a $31 million expansion by a unit of Germany’s Schütz Container Systems in the latest investment targeting Midwest customers by the maker of intermediate bulk containers.

Schütz is expected to create 20 jobs by adding a new industrial packaging product line in St. Joseph.

“Their investment reinforces the strength of our state’s manufacturing sector, our highly skilled workforce, and our commitment to supporting businesses that choose to grow here,” . “This expansion will bring quality jobs and continued economic momentum to northwest Missouri, and we look forward to a strong partnership for years to come.”

Schütz provides a production and service network in North America for intermediate bulk containers. Its packing systems are used to transport and store products like chemicals, hazardous goods and foods. The German parent company, headquartered in Selters, is Schütz GmbH & Co. KGaA, which boasts 7,000 employees and 55 production and service locations worldwide.

“With this expansion,” said Frederik Wenzel, U.S. subsidiary president and CEO, “we’re increasing our container manufacturing capacity and creating new jobs to meet rising demand. The skilled workforce and strong community support make St. Joseph the right place to invest in our future.”

The St. Joseph site will be the first of 14 North American locations to manufacture a new product line for an unspecified type of industrial packaging. This venture will involve constructing a new building “using the latest generation of fully electric equipment to maximize efficiency, quality and cleanliness in production,” according to a Missouri Department of Economic Development announcement.

Missouri state officials captured business from Schütz after visiting the parent company in 2022 during a trade mission to Germany and the Netherlands.

“Schütz’s expansion in St. Joseph is a great example of what can be accomplished through strong partnerships,” said Michelle Hataway, DED director. “We’re proud to work alongside our outstanding local partners to enhance ongoing investment and create quality jobs. Together, we’re supporting business growth that helps Missouri communities thrive.”

The state is providing a financial incentive to Schütz through the Missouri Works program, which helps companies expand and retain employees by providing access to capital through withholdings or tax credits for jobs created.

Schütz has U.S. sites in California (Fontana), Georgia (Carl), Illinois (Posen), Indiana (Plainfield), New Jersey (Branchburg), North Carolina (Lexington), Ohio (Perrysburg), Texas (Pasadena) and Wisconsin (Kenosha).

The company recently opened the plant in Wisconsin as part of an effort to strategically expand its global production network. Kenosha was selected because it is between Milwaukee (to the north about 40 miles away) and Chicago (65 miles south). That 370,000-square-foot plant will make plastic drums and intermediate bulk containers for Midwest customers.

“The new production facility is conveniently located off Interstate 94 and U.S. Highway 41 (Skokie Highway),” the parent company noted in July. “With this good connection to the economically strong Chicago-Milwaukee corridor, it offers logistical advantages as well as providing access to a large pool of skilled labor. The selected site also offers potential for future expansion.”
