UPS Inc. reported double-digit gains in the first quarter as a result of the strength of its global business as well as economic conditions.

The holding company for Knight Transportation and Swift Transportation reported results for the first quarter of 2018 that reflect “progress” in achieving cost savings for the combined enterprise but also difficulty in finding enough drivers to meet increasing demand for service.

Landstar System reported its best first quarter with revenue jumping 34.2% to $1.05 billion and profits reaching a record $57.5 million, or $1.37 a share, as demand for freight hauling continued to strain truck capacity in the market.
