Volvo Trucks North America has landed a 185-unit order from Koch Trucking for the newly launched Volvo VNL 860.

The autonomous trucks will be manufactured at Volvo Trucks North America’s New River Valley production plant in Dublin, Va. The first batch was built there in the final quarter of 2024.

Volvo Trucks North America believes its recently redesigned VNL over-the-road model includes features that can help customers navigate the industry’s challenging market dynamics.

The new units expand a long-running supplier relationship at a scale that signals how big fleets are renewing equipment to strengthen operations and keep experienced drivers in the seats.

Almost 600 of the Volvo Group AB unit’s battery-electric straight trucks and tractors are now operational in the U.S. and Canada, collectively driving more than 200,000 miles every week.

San Francisco-based Verne plans to offer truck makers the option of cryo-compressed hydrogen storage to achieve the same range as a diesel tractor.

There’s a synergy among driver comfort, simplicity of maintenance, better fuel economy and fleet operating ratio. Several significant changes in these areas are seen in Volvo’s 2024 VNL.

Volvo Trucks North America has battery-electric, hydrogen fuel cell and renewable fuel internal combustion engine versions on the horizon.
