The Teamsters union on June 1 announced a tentative contract agreement with vehicle hauling companies that employ an estimated 8,100 drivers, just hours after the previous contract expired.

ABF Freight System said it filed legal actions Monday against units of YRC Worldwide and the Teamsters union for what it said were violations of the National Master Freight Agreement collective bargaining agreement that covers most U.S. unionized trucking employees.

Allied Systems Holdings and the Teamsters union are clashing over the possible reversal of a 17.5% pay cut the union agreed to three years ago when the car hauler emerged from bankruptcy.

Teamsters union workers rejected a voluntary 15% pay reduction at ABF Freight System Inc. that the company had sought to bring its pay package closer to the one the union has with ABF’s chief LTL rival, YRC Worldwide.

The Teamsters union said it was beginning talks Thursday with ABF Freight System on the company’s request for wage reductions.
