YRC Worldwide Inc. last week pressed the Teamsters for more cost cuts to placate its lenders and sought formal negotiations with the union to extend the existing contract that is set to expire in early 2015.

The Teamsters union last week approved the final outstanding supplement to a national five-year labor contract with Arkansas Best Corp.’s ABF Freight System unit, making the agreement’s full ratification official.

Arkansas Best Corp.’s ABF Freight System unit has lost another round in its court action against the Teamsters union and YRC Worldwide Inc. over a national freight contract.

Teamsters union workers employed by DHL subsidiary Air Express International have approved a one-year contract extension, the union said.

ABF Freight System and the Teamsters have agreed to a contract extension through the end of August that will allow union members to vote on supplemental agreements to the ABF National Master Freight Agreement.

More than 100 truck drivers who work for an Australian logistics firm at the Port of New York and New Jersey have voted to join the Teamsters, the union said.

Teamsters employees at ABF Freight System approved a new master contract, but additional talks will be required later this month because some side agreements were rejected.

The Teamsters union and UPS Inc. said they are resuming talks on rejected supplemental agreements to a master contract for the Package division that won rank-and-file approval last week, and the two are trying to reach a new tentative deal for workers in UPS’ Freight division.

Leaders of the Teamsters union last week said they approved a tentative five-year contract agreement with ABF Freight System that includes a 7% pay cut, setting the stage for rank-and-file voting to begin June 3.
