Goods are literally flying off the shelves today in Iceland as online retailer Aha launches what it calls the world’s first autonomous drone delivery system in an urban setting.

High above the Balfour interchange on State Route 4 in Brentwood, Calif., a drone buzzes, its sensors keeping a close watch on the volumes of earth being moved to make way for a new highway bypass.

Chinese delivery company SF Holding said it has obtained a landmark license from the country’s military authorities to use drones to deliver commercial packages and was conducting the country’s first drone pilot demonstration zone.

UPS Inc., teaming up with drone-maker CyPhy Works, announced drone tests to deliver packages in remote areas.The first test was earlier this week to move medicine from a Boston area community to Children’s Island, located about three miles from the mainland and without automobile access. UPS also has done drone application tests inside warehouses to track stock availability and assessment of relief aid deliveries, also in hard-to-reach locations. (video by UPS Inc.)
