SAN ANTONIO — A total of 163 truck technicians came here to compete at the Rush Truck Centers “Tech Skills Rodeo” in categories including engines, parts and body repair.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration last week issued a proposed rule to upgrade U.S. standards for rear-impact guards that enhance truck and trailer underride protection, in an effort to reduce the severity of passenger vehicle crashes into the back of trailers.

Federal regulators will soon be required to abandon plans to issue a final rule requiring tank truck carriers that haul flammable liquids to either retrofit their existing trailers to protect their wetlines or install a system to purge product from those lines.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration on Dec. 10 announced its long-awaited final rule requiring that interstate drivers use electronic recording devices intended to enforce hours-of-service regulations, and reduce driver fatigue and paperwork for motor carriers and drivers.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration on Dec. 9 announced a proposed rule that would require all passengers and occupants riding in property-carrying commercial motor vehicles to use safety belts. 

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Dec. 7 issued a proposed rule to upgrade current rear impact guards on trucks and trailers to address underride protection in car crashes into trailers and semitrailers.

Federal regulators last week issued a final rule that prohibits fleets as well as shippers and brokers from coercing truck drivers to violate hours-of-service and other safety regulations.
