The European Union believes trade negotiations with the U.S. could extend beyond President Donald Trump’s July 9 deadline, even as the speed of the talks has increased over the past week.

The European Union and U.S. made scant progress bridging trade differences this week as U.S. officials indicated that the bulk of the U.S. tariffs imposed on the bloc will not be removed.

The EU is broadening the list of U.S. goods it will target with retaliatory tariffs if U.S. President Donald Trump follows through on his threat to impose duties on steel and aluminum exports.
