Private Fleets Keep Supply Chains Humming Across Industries

Shippers Reassessing Fleet Growth Strategies in Uncertain Business Environment

From food and beverage distributors to the oil and gas sector, large companies across many industries rely on their private fleets to keep their supply chains moving.

Many of the largest private carriers across sectors have slowed their growth plans or maintained the sizes of their tractor fleets during the past year amid unpredictable business conditions.

Food Service

Sysco Corp., the largest food distributor in North America, retained its No. 1 spot on the food service sector list with its fleet of 9,218 tractors.



US Foods remains second on the list despite a 5% reduction in its fleet size in the past year, ahead of third-ranked Performance Foodservice, a business unit of Performance Food Group.

PFG recently rebuffed an invitation by US Foods to evaluate a merger of the two companies.

Meanwhile, Gordon Food Service moves up to the No. 4 spot on this year’s food service list, overtaking No. 5 PepsiCo Foods North America, which downsized its tractor fleet by nearly 21% since 2024.

Beverage

In the beverage industry, PepsiCo Beverages North America and Reyes Beverage Group continued to lead the pack, growing their respective fleets by 386 and 711 tractors during the past year.

Due to the availability of updated equipment data, Keurig Dr Pepper and its fleet of 2,591 tractors rejoin this year’s list at No. 3. The company last appeared on the beverage sector list in 2018, with a fleet of 2,331 tractors at the time.

Coca-Cola Bottling Co. ­United and Reyes Coca-Cola Bottling round out the top five, both operating fleets of more than 1,700 tractors.

Pepsi Bottling Ventures, an addition to this year’s Top 100 list, joins the beverage sector at No. 11. The independent Pepsi-Cola bottler operates 566 tractors in its fleet

Agriculture and Food Processing

Tyson Foods and Nutrien remain atop the agriculture and food processing sector with the former adding 120 tractors in the past year for a total of more than 3,000.

Dairy Farmers of America joined this year’s list at No. 3 with 2,110 tractors in its fleet, while CHS Inc. and Darling Ingredients round out the top five.

Manufacturing

Ashley Furniture Industries again led the manufacturing sector list, expanding its fleet to 1,256 tractors.

Mohawk Industries jumped to No. 2 on this year’s list, adding 193 tractors to surpass the fleet operated by No. 3 Shaw Industries Group. Advanced Drainage Systems and Thyssenkrupp Materials round out the top five.

Building Materials

The Quikrete Cos. and Builders FirstSource lead this year’s building materials sector list, with fleets of 1,886 and 1,706 tractors, respectively.

ABC Supply moved up two ­places to No. 3 on this year’s list, while CRH Americas and Cemex USA rounded out the top five, all with fleets of more than 1,000 tractors.

Newcomer QXO Inc. joined the list at No. 8 after completing its acquisition of Beacon Roofing Supply in April, operating a fleet of 743 tractors.

Equipment Rental

In the equipment rental industry, United Rentals and Sunbelt Rentals continued to pace the segment with both operating fleets of more than 2,000 tractors.

Herc Holdings, the parent company of Herc Rentals, jumped to No. 3 on the list after its acquisition of H&E Equipment Services, which ranked No. 5 on last year’s list. The combined fleet operates 1,280 tractors.

WillScot Mobile Mini came in at No. 4, while EquipmentShare joined the list at No. 5.

Petroleum and Chemical

Halliburton Co. retained its position as the largest private carrier in the petroleum and chemical industries despite operating 1,462 fewer tractors this year than in 2024.

Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores moved up to No. 3 on this year’s list after expanding its private fleet by 270 tractors.

Pilot Co., No. 4 on the list, grew its fleet by about 2% since 2024 as well. Cudd Energy Services, a subsidiary of RPC Inc., dropped two spots to No. 5 on this year’s list.

Construction

Despite a decrease of 109 tractors since last year, MasTec Inc. again led the construction sector list with 628 power units.

Williams Brothers Construction moved up one spot to No. 2 after overtaking Michels Corp., which ranks No. 3 after a decrease of 123 tractors.

Hulcher Services and R.J. Corman Railroad Services round out the top five on the construction list.

Waste Management

Clean Harbors Environmental Services, Ecology Transportation Services and Stericycle Inc. maintain their rankings in the top three on the waste management sector list.

Reworld, formerly known as Covanta, moves to No. 4 on that list after adding 41 tractors to its fleet, while Liquid Environmental Solutions rounds out the top five with 429 power units.

Wholesale and Retail

The top 10 fleets on the wholesale and retail list remained the same as a year ago, with Walmart Inc. continuing to lead the pack with its fleet of 12,696 tractors.

Grocery

The grocery list also saw little change this year, with the top eight retaining their rankings from last year. Hy-Vee Inc. jumped up one place to No. 9 after adding 131 tractors to its fleet.

Paper and Office Products

The top five fleets in the paper and office products sector all expanded in the past year, most notably Smurfit Westrock, which jumped to No. 3 on the list. Veritiv Corp. continues to lead the way with 584 tractors.

Industrial Gases

The two largest fleets in the industrial gases sector both expanded in the past year, as No. 1 Air Liquide USA and No. 2 Linde each grew their fleets significantly. Linde moves two spots up the list after ranking No. 4 last year.

Other Sectors

Medline Industries, which operates the largest private fleet in the health care sector, expanded by 190 tractors in the past year, bringing its total fleet size to 1,427. Fresenius USA Manufacturing joins this year’s health care list at No. 2.

On the uniform rental industry list, the top five fleets remained unchanged from last year, with Vestis Corp. again leading the way. All of the top three — Vestis, UniFirst Corp. and Cintas Corp. — slightly expanded their fleets in the past year.

NBCUniversal Media continued to lead the media and entertainment sector list with a fleet of more than 200 tractors.
