Dutch Firm NewCold to Open Storage Site Near Port of Baltimore

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore announced that Netherlands-based will spend $275 million on a high-tech cold storage facility near the Port of Baltimore that is expected to create between 125 and 150 jobs.
“We’re thrilled to partner with NewCold to bring new jobs and new technology to Maryland,” Moore said. “Maryland is focused on growing our economy, investing in industries of the future and making our state more business-friendly.”
Privately held NewCold is a refrigerated food logistics provider with headquarters in Breda. It has 25 automated warehouses on three continents and offers a combined capacity of 1.9 million pallet positions. It currently has U.S. facilities in McDonough, Ga.; Burley, Idaho; Chicago; Lebanon, Ind. and Tacoma, Wash.
The new facility will be located in Hagerstown, Md., a little more than an hour away from the Port of Baltimore. The site was chosen because of its location in the East Coast supply chain.
“With access to numerous rail lines, interstates and airports, as well as close proximity to the Port of Baltimore, our mid-Atlantic location will help NewCold expand its reach throughout the globe. We’re excited to welcome NewCold to Maryland, where it will be able to serve international customers with ease,” state Commerce Secretary Harry Coker Jr. said.
The warehouse will be near the intersection of interstates 70 and 81. The proximity to I-70 will provide key access to the Baltimore-Washington area (both just over 70 miles away), while I-81 will enable freight corridor connections to Northeast and mid-Atlantic markets.
NewCold’s facilities use proprietary technology such as automated storage and retrieval systems that move and store products in high-bay warehouses.

“NewCold’s state-of-the-art, automated facility will require a number of technology and specialized workers. The new investment and quality, skilled jobs will be a boost to our economy,” McIntire said.

The city is supporting an effort by the Maryland Department of Commerce to approve a $1 million conditional loan through the Advantage Marylandeconomic development program as an incentive to support the project.
NewCold recently announced it was expanding in Poland.

“With a growing transport fleet, NewCold provides end-to-end supply chain solutions to leading food companies powered by proprietary technology and backed by a team of 2,700 people from over 40 cultures,” the company stated.
