Transport Topics’ updated lists of the busiest container ports and cargo airports in North America provide a fresh look at the continent’s most important hubs for ocean and air cargo.
These rankings are based on 2024 volumes so they do not yet reflect the trade policy shifts and market volatility that have shaken up international freight patterns this year, but they do indicate that most large container ports increased throughput last year compared with 2023, while landed tonnage results at the largest cargo airports were more mixed.
The Port of Los Angeles remains North America’s busiest container port after handling nearly 10.3 million 20-foot-equivalent units in 2024, up more than 19% from the prior year.
The neighboring Port of Long Beach was just behind at 9.6 million TEUs handled, followed by the third-ranked Port of New York and New Jersey at nearly 8.7 million TEUs.
This year’s top 25 list of container ports includes a pair of newcomers: the Port of Philadelphia at No. 23 and the Port of Prince Rupert in British Columbia at No. 25.
Meanwhile, Ted Stevens Anchorage International in Alaska once again leads the ranking of the top cargo airports in North America with nearly 25.5 billion pounds of landed cargo, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
Memphis International, home to FedEx’s flagship hub terminal, ranks No. 2 for the fourth consecutive year.
