LAS VEGAS — The American Transportation Research Institute released its annual top 10 list of critical issues affecting the trucking industry on Oct. 3 at the Management Conference & Exhibition. It also announced a new app with the National Association of Truck Stop Owners to address one of those issues: parking.

SAN ANTONIO — Upcoming regulations, the presidential election, a softer freight market and supply chain disruptions are contributing to “uncertain times” for the trucking industry. But those challenges also present opportunities for fleets that are better prepared than their competitors, McLeod Software’s CEO said.

The U.S. Department of Transportation last week issued guidelines for testing and deployment of highly automated vehicles. Top administration officials said they want to promote development of self-driving technology to reduce crashes on the nation’s roadways.

Logistics provider TransPlace’s carrier survey of preparedness for the 2017 electronic logging device mandate has found a sharp divide between larger and smaller fleets, with 38% of smaller fleets having no immediate plans to install ELDs in their vehicles.

While many technologies will likely play a role in shaping the future of transportation, two of the most important will be the emergence of automated driving systems and the continuing evolution of data analytics.

Fleets and technology providers alike are optimistic about coming changes to International Fuel Tax Agreement record-keeping and audit procedures, saying the revisions will streamline carrier record-keeping requirements, accommodate advances in onboard technology and clarify specifications for states’ acceptance of data captured by electronic devices.
