Landstar System Inc. net income tumbled 20%, hurt by a combination of weaker trucking results and accident costs, while Marten Transport Ltd. earnings rose 2.1%, helped by dedicated and intermodal results as well as gains on equipment sales.

Landstar System Inc. lowered its first-quarter earnings outlook by as much as 5 cents per share due to higher than expected insurance costs and lower than forecast revenue.

Landstar System said its third-quarter profit climbed 25.7% to a record high, driven by “very strong” demand for trucking services.

Landstar System Inc.’s board of directors has appointed James Gattoni as CEO, succeeding Henry Gerkens, who will continue to serve as executive chairman until May 2015.

Landstar System reported its second-quarter net income rose to $35.9 million, or 80 cents per share, from $30.4 million, or 66 cents, a year ago.

Landstar System said Oct. 24 its third-quarter earnings slipped from a year ago as “the U.S. economy continues to experience very slow growth.”

Landstar System said Thursday its second-quarter earnings slipped from a year ago but that the first few weeks of the third quarter have shown improvement.
