Walmart to Open $300M Fulfillment Center in North Carolina

Charlotte-Area Facility to Open in 2027, Provide Next-Day Large-Item Deliveries

Walmart Inc. is investing $300 million to build a 1.2 million-square-foot fulfillment center near Interstate 85 in North Carolina to expedite shipments of large items — sometimes for next-day deliveries.

The facility is expected to open in 2027. It will be located in Kings Mountain, some 35 miles east of the Charlotte metro area. Sept. 30.

“North Carolina offers global companies like Walmart a friendly business climate, strong workforce development programs, and a transportation network tailored to their logistics needs,” he said.



The state provided Walmart Fulfillment Services with financial incentive as a means of luring the investment. Specifically, the company will receive a from the state’s Economic Investment Committee.

These performance-based grants provide cash payments to companies that invest in and create jobs in the state. Walmart received a grant for the maximum 12-year term, with potential reimbursements of up to $3.66 million spread throughout the term as incremental job-creation and investment targets are met.

The fulfillment center will ship items such as patio furniture and lawn mowers directly to customers. It will have access to State Highway 161, a main highway that connects to South Carolina, as well as I-85.

The interstate is a major North Carolina freight corridor. According to the state’s 2022 freight plan, more than 16,000 trucks per day utilize the I-85 corridor north of Charlotte, making it the state’s busiest trucking segment.

Karisa Sprague, supply chain senior vice president at Walmart U.S., said, “As our e-commerce business continues to grow, this new fulfillment center will play a critical role in helping us serve customers faster. We’re excited to join the Kings Mountain community and proud to create long-term career opportunities where associates can grow and build their future with Walmart.”

The facility is expected to create 300 new jobs in Gaston County, injecting an estimated $20 million annually in payroll into the local economy.

“Following an extensive search, it’s great to see Walmart choose North Carolina as the best location from which to serve their growing customer demand,” said state Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley.

Walmart’s footprint in North Carolina includes a combined 214 Walmart and Sam’s Clubs locations along with seven supply chain facilities, employing a total of 62,300 people.

The governor’s office noted the company also supports local businesses; in fiscal year 2025 Walmart spent $9 billion with state suppliers, which supported 88,000 supplier jobs.
