New routes were approved by state lawmakers in May for travel by trucks up to 72 feet in overall length without the need of a $20 permit (5-22, p. 6). The 72-foot limit includes units pulling 53-foot trailers, which have become the industry standard. (Click here for a map of the routes.)
The legislation also allowed authorized third-party services to issue permits for trucks up to 72-feet long for routes off the new truck network. State officials say that provision has been delayed but will be available soon.
Sgt. Guy N. Welch of the Vermont Agency of Transportation’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit said the state is busy sending notices and maps out to trucking companies, advising them of their options.
