The United States and its trade partners ought not respond to the economic crisis by adopting protectionist measures and restricting free trade, the CEO of UPS Inc. told the Chamber of Commerce Thursday.
鈥淣o argument against free trade can justify the negative impact to economic and human development,鈥 Scott Davis said, according to a UPS statement.
Davis told the Chamber that perception and reality are often at odds in the debate about global trade, and that advocates of free trade ought to make their arguments known.
Davis argued that global trade creates U.S. jobs, adding that international competition or relocation rarely causes layoffs.
Global trade has resulted in a 鈥渂etter, safer, more hopeful and more prosperous world,鈥 Davis said.
UPS is ranked No. 1 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
