Ryder System acquired Georgia mobile truck and trailer maintenance specialist Truck Service Depot on Jan. 6 for an undisclosed sum, the company said.

Acquiring Atlanta-based Truck Service Depot is intended to strengthen and expand Ryder’s Torque by Ryder retail mobile maintenance business.

Minimizing downtime at the side of the road or on the back of a tow truck is a key cost metric for fleets — especially in a weak freight market — including through mobile repairs, transport-as-a-service options and truck maker remote software updates.

Acquiring Truck Service Depot is part of Ryder’s ongoing expansion of services in the Southeast.

In December, Ryder opened a 20,000-square-foot rental and maintenance facility in McDonough, Ga. The location on the south side of the metropolitan Atlanta area affords proximity to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and a growing inland port.

Ryder opened a 7,000-square-foot rental and maintenance facility in Lebanon, Tenn., in October about 20 miles east of Nashville.

Also, Ryder began using real-time commercial fleet roadside assistance technology across Florida in June.

Ryder, which ranks No. 6 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest for-hire carriers in North America and No. 7 on the TT Top 100 logistics companies list, was the first major customer of Coral Springs, Fla., software company Tow4Tech.

Tow4Tech’s platform connects fleet managers and service centers with towing and roadside providers using real-time geolocation, automated dispatching and digital job tracking.

“Ryder is working closely with Tow4Tech in the Florida market to optimize workflows and assess performance. We’ll continue to evaluate options for a broader rollout based on the performance outcomes we’re seeing,” a Ryder spokesperson said Jan. 6.
