Rivian Automotive Inc. produced about half as many electric vehicles as Wall Street expected in the second quarter prior to the launch of 2026 model year vehicles later this month.

The EV maker assembled 5,979 trucks, SUVs and delivery vans at its factory in Normal, Ill., during the period, in line with its outlook, the company said in a statement on July 2. Analysts had expected the company to make more than 11,300 vehicles, according to estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

A company spokesperson said output was limited to avoid producing too many 2025 models so close to the upcoming model-year change.

Rivian delivered 10,661 vehicles to customers in the quarter, just shy of the 10,910 expected by analysts. The company reaffirmed its goal to deliver as many as 46,000 EVs to customers this year, which would be its first decline in annual sales. Rivian delivered more than 51,000 vehicles last year.

Output will slow again later this year when Rivian carries out a planned monthlong production halt to prepare its Illinois factory to make the upcoming R2 midsize SUV, which is expected to launch next year.

Rivian’s shares fell less than 1% before the start of regular trading in New York.
