WASHINGTON — The head of a new federal regulatory agency said she is awaiting the opportunity to issue several new motor carrier safety regulations this year.

At a March 8 reception for the inauguration of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, acting director Julie A. Cirillo said tops on her list is updating the hours-of-service regulation, which has not been changed in more than 60 years. Proposed revisions are undergoing review at the White House.

This year, she would also like her agency to release rules defining an unfit carrier, set training requirements for entry-level truck and bus drivers and establish training standards for multiple-trailer combination vehicle drivers.

The agency also plans to develop a revised safety rating process to determine motor carrier safety fitness.
