LAS VEGAS — Truckers should urge Congress to prevent the Department of Transportation from adopting its own proposal for changing the hours-of-service-regulations, the president of American Trucking Associations said here June 29.

Responding to a loud and sometimes raucous outpouring of opposition to DOT’s plan from truckers gathered in a hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center, Walter B. McCormick Jr. delivered an impassioned call to “grass-roots” action by the trucking industry.

He followed Julie A. Cirillo, acting safety director for DOT’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, to the podium. Cirillo had attempted to clarify provisions of the hours proposal in answer to questions posed by the truckers.

McCormick warned that time is running out for those who oppose the DOT plan.
