Intermodal Volume Rises 8.2% in Second Quarter
Intermodal volume in the second quarter rose 8.2%, an indication the industry is recovering from a harsh winter and a contracted economy, according to the Intermodal Association of North America.
The trade group said shipments totaled 4.17 million. In total, domestic shipments rose 7.6% to 1.63 million while international totaled 2.13 million, a rise of 9.6% on a year-over-year basis. Trailer shipments rose 4.3% to 414,357.
鈥淭he second-quarter results were indicative of a rebounding economy and higher than predicted import shipments,鈥 Joni Casey, CEO of IANA, said in a statement.
鈥淚t is also probable the harsh winter that resulted in constricted Q1 capacity contributed to the second quarter鈥檚 strong growth, by comparison,鈥 Casey said.
The trade group also said the Trans-Canada corridor led the way in corridor growth with a 10.5% quarter over quarter increase on a rise in shipments from eastern Canada to western Canada.
