Calling trucking a “noble profession” he’s proud to serve, Greg Hodgen of Groendyke Transport was elected the 81st chairman of on Oct. 28, marking a new chapter in a career that has spanned more than three decades.
Hodgen’s election capped ATA’s Management Conference & Exhibition, held over four days in San Diego.
Hodgen, who leads the Enid, Okla.-based tank truck carrier, succeeds Dennis Dellinger, president and CEO of Cargo Transporters. The appointment places him at the center of national policy discussions for an industry that moves more than 70% of the nation’s freight.

“It is a tremendous honor to be the 81st chairman of the American Trucking Associations,” Hodgen said. “Trucking is a noble profession, one that I love and am proud to have been a part of for the past three decades. As I step into this role, I carry with me the stories, challenges and values that define our industry.”
Hodgen joined Groendyke more than 30 years ago and helped build it into one of the nation’s largest tank truck carriers. His election reflects both his operational experience and his long-standing involvement with ATA.

“Over the past several decades, Greg has built a highly successful career at Groendyke and has been instrumental in growing the company,” ATA President Chris Spear said. “Our federation is stronger because of his invaluable insights and inspiring leadership. I look forward to working with him on tackling a wide range of issues facing our industry, particularly the scourge of lawsuit abuse.”
Dellinger praised Hodgen’s leadership and dedication, calling his appointment “well earned.”
“With the growing number of challenges we face, steady, experienced leadership is needed now more than ever,” Dellinger said. “With Greg at the helm, ATA will continue to prove its value proposition for our members and remain a strong voice for the millions of Americans our industry employs.”
ATA’s board also elected Derek Leathers, chairman and CEO of Werner Enterprises in Omaha, Neb., as first vice chair; Randy Clifford, chairman and CEO of Ventura Transfer Co. in Long Beach, Calif., as second vice chair; and Gregg Troian, president of PGT Trucking in Aliquippa, Pa., as vice chair. John M. Smith, chairman of CRST International Holdings, was re-elected secretary, and Harold Sumerford Jr., CEO of J&M Tank Lines, was chosen as treasurer.
