Freightliner Corp. is recalling thousands of vocational and severe-service type trucks with air brakes made since 1991 to repair a faulty brake pin that the National Transportation Safety Board said contributed to a fatal accident.

The Portland, Ore., truck maker announced the recall of 133,000 Business Class trucks Nov. 2, after NTSB Chairman James Hall said a faulty brake pin was the cause of a dump truck losing its primary braking capability in an accident that killed two people in Lincoln, Neb.

The recall does not involve over-the-road power units for tractor-trailers or school buses. Nor does it involve Freightliner’s subsidiaries Sterling Truck Co., Western Star and American LaFrance, which makes fire trucks.

According to the NTSB, the brake pin fractured, rendering the brakes inoperable.
