he Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration said it will consider allowing drivers with insulin-treated diabetes to operate large trucks. Most people with diabetes have been barred from driving trucks for 35 years.

The issue, according to an agency spokesman, would be the first one tackled by FMCSA’s newly established five-member medical review board.

“This is the first thing on their plate,” said spokesman Ian Grossman.

In a March 17 Federal Register notice, FMCSA said it might change its standards to “allow the operation of commercial motor vehicles by drivers with insulin-treated diabetes whose physical conditions are adequate to allow them operate safely and without deleterious effects on their health.”
