Execs Back Legislation to Check Drivers Hauling Dangerous Goods

| Staff Reporterrucking industry groups said they would support new legislation focusing federal efforts on checking the backgrounds of drivers who haul “security-sensitive” material, provided it replaces the current system.
Testifying on behalf of American Trucking Associations, David McClimon, president of Con-way Freight, told a panel of the House ýland Security Committee June 15 that the association believes the bill embodies “a common sense, risk-based approach to the threats posed by the transportation of certain materials.”Though ATA was “encouraged by the introduction of the SAFE Truckers Act,” he said the legislation needed some improvements.
