The national average diesel price dipped 2.3 cents to edge below $4 a gallon, according to data released April 22.

Highlights

• The current price of $3.992 marks the first time trucking’s main fuel has cost less than $4 since April 1.
• A gallon of diesel on average costs 8.5 cents less than it did at this time in 2023.
• Diesel’s average price went down in eight of the 10 regions in and up in two. The largest decrease was 7.3 cents in the Rocky Mountain region; the biggest gain was 1.5 cents in New England.
• California, at 28.4 cents more expensive, is the only region in which a gallon of diesel costs more than at this time a year ago.
• Meanwhile, gasoline rose 4 cents a gallon on a average to reach $3.668. That's 1.2 cents more than at this time in 2023.
