American Trucking Associations will keep fighting the Oct. 1 federal deadline for new trucks to use reduced-emissions diesel engines, but will also educate policymakers about future regulatory deadlines, ATA President William J. Canary said.

“October is our immediate focus,” Canary said, but “whatever happens in October, we’re not going away, and this issue is not going away.”

Canary made the remarks in an Aug. 17 interview with Transport Topics at ATA’s National Truck Driving Championships in Milwaukee.

The White House Office of Management and Budget recently rejected industry calls to delay the Oct. 1 deadline for tougher emissions rules, and trucking officials, as well as some manufacturers, have vowed to try to keep fighting it anyway in the courts and in legislation.
