Emissions from cargo ships would be reduced under legislation that passed the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, the Associated Press reported.

The diesel that ships currently burn has a sulfur content many thousand times higher than diesel sold for trucks, AP said.

The bill was introduced by Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), chairwoman of the committee, AP said.
