I own a small motor carrier and drive as well. In the past 38 years, I have driven trucks all across the United States, both regional and cross country, and I am reaching the end of my career with more than 3 million safe miles covered.

How can the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration so closely regulate a driver and then ignore the environment in which that driver operates?

I am writing regarding my opposition to the recent bill in Congress to raise broker surety bonds to $100,000 (“Bill Would Mandate Bond of $100,000 for Brokers,” 7-4, p. 3).

In your article about bill number S. 1281 on July 4, the focus should have been on safe transport, not on banning one specialized form of transportation.

Thank you for your March 21 cover story, “Vets Make Valuable Employees, Several Motor Carriers Report.” There is no greater testament to the value that our military veterans bring to our industry than from those carriers with firsthand experience attracting, hiring and supporting them as they develop careers in transportation.

No one knows the Canada-U.S. border and the difficulties even the most trusted individuals and companies have had crossing it in the “security trumps trade” post-9/11 world than truckers. It’s not surprising, then, that truckers welcome the announcement from U.S. President Barack Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper that the two countries are embarking upon negotiations aimed at improved cooperation and coordination at the border.

I cannot agree more with the arguments in support of “larger” trucks. However, when applied in support of “heavier” trucks, they fall short — particularly when compared with the effects on outdated, deteriorating highways and bridges.

I was reading your Nov. 1 issue and came across the article about the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, electric onboard recorders and hours of service. I read the article and felt I should put in my 2 cents’ worth on this issue.

Every day, we hear on the radio, TV and various websites that the American people are angry about the economy, job losses and the high unemployment rate in this country.
