The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has ruled that Boston’s efforts to stop trucks from carrying hazardous materials through the city during certain hours is illegal, the Associated Press reported.

BALTIMORE — A proposed House bill prohibiting the transportation of flammable liquids in unprotected product piping on cargo tank trucks would result in an overall increase in welding shop fatalities and cost the industry $200 million to comply, an American Trucking Associations official told a Congressional panel Monday.

In a first step toward satisfying its obligations detailed in an out-of-court settlement with American Trucking Associations, Port of Long Beach commissioners last week gave preliminary approval to a new drayage truck registration process that will simplify and limit requirements of the port’s clean trucks plan.

WASHINGTON — Debbie Hersman, the new chairwoman of the National Transportation Safety Board, said that fatigue was an “insidious” factor in all types transportation accidents and recommended that as the Department of Transportation reviews its hours-of-service rule for truckers it mandate the use of electronic onboard recorders and use all available fatigue research to craft a new rule.

American Trucking Associations has requested a meeting with Department of Transportation officials to discuss the agency’s intention to revise federal driver work rules issued during the Bush administration.

The United States and Canada should work more closely together on policies and regulations to improve competition and economic competitiveness, as well as to make highways safer and trucking’s environmental footprint smaller,  said David Bradley, chief executive officer of the Canadian Trucking Alliance.

Natural gas is not a viable alternative fuel for most longhaul trucking operations, but it could be an acceptable alternative fuel for some shorthaul carriers, American Trucking Associations told the Senate Energy Committee.
