John Sommers' Favorite Trucking Photos

  • It’s always fun to try to make a speaker look more dynamic than simply standing at a podium.
  • I like to use the sun for backlight to give a unique look.
  • I like to give things a different perspective that forces the viewer to truly look into the images and understand them.
  • I like to use slow shutter speeds to give trucks a sense of movement and balance in the framing.
  • I love a fun picture that gives viewers a sense of the event.
  • I like to use different angles to add intrigue. This is from the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Ky., March 27, 2014.
  • I like the idea of using other elements to show space and texture that give routine images something extra.
  • The details of this PKY Truck Beauty contestant at the 2017 Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Ky., March 24, 2017, tell you what you're looking at without showing the whole object.
  • I love to shoot sunsets, and this picture gives the viewer a lot to look at in the rail yard of downtown St. Louis.
  • I like this image as it shows a truck's environment and its use along with the nature surrounding it.
  • I like this image’s fun elements, and the message is conveyed clearly for the viewer. From the 39th Annual Mid-America Trucking Show at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Ky., March 24, 2010.
  • I like this one because I used a reflective surface to show people together with a truck at the 2017 Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Ky., March 24, 2017.
  • I like that this image shows nature adjacent to the truck.
  • I like this image as it shows the truck’s silhouette against the sky and gives the viewer more than just another truck picture.

Freelance photographer John Sommers has been taking trucking photos for Transport Topics since 2010. As part of our celebration for the launch of the redesigned TTNews.com, we wanted to show you what our photo galleries would look like, and asked John to pick out his favorite images that he has shot for us. Enjoy!
