Two of the nation’s largest less-than-truckload carriers announced general tariff rate increases of almost 6%, both effective Aug. 1.

Buoyed by strong second quarter earnings, Yellow Corp. of Overland Park, Kan., led the way with a July 14 statement that it will be charging shippers 5.9% more on average. The increase is for the corporation’s flagship company, Yellow Freight System, and does not apply to its regional carriers.

Three days after the announcement by Yellow, Consolidated Freightways Corp. of Menlo Park, Calif., said it too would be raising its general tariff rates, but by slightly less – 5.85% on average.

Yellow is the nation’s largest long-haul LTL carrier, and CF holds the No. 3 spot in that category. Neither No. 2 Roadway Express nor fourth-place Arkansas Best have announced rate hikes.
