Haney Truck Line

Wilson Logistics Inc., based in Springfield, Mo., has purchased the assets of Haney Truck Line, adding flatbed and heavy-specialized freight hauling to its portfolio of trucking and logistics services while significantly expanding business in the Pacific Northwest and parts of Canada.

The purchase includes 400 tractors and 1,200 trailers, plus terminals in Spokane, Yakima and Tumwater, Wash., Boise, Idaho; and Portland, Ore.

Terms were not disclosed.

The seller was Evergreen Pacific Partners, a Seattle-based investment firm that has owned Haney for the past decade.

“We are honored to bring Haney Truck Line’s rich history and expertise into our organization,” Darrel Wilson, CEO of Wilson Logistics, said in a statement. “We believe our depth and breadth of knowledge in wide ranges of the supply chain provide us the opportunity to quickly integrate our operational procedures, safety culture, equipment and technology to provide the quality of service that we are committed to.”

The purchase of Haney’s assets is similar to other deals made by Wilson Logistics in recent years, including assets of Jim Palmer Trucking in Missoula, Mont., in 2014, O&S Trucking in Springfield, Mo., in 2016, and RJ’s Transportation in Stevensville, Mont., earlier this year.

Wilson Logistics, which began as Wil-Trans in 1990, is owned by members of the Wilson family and provides a range of transportation services, including refrigerated and dry van truckload, dedicated contract carriage, power-only transportation, freight brokerage and yard management, with a total of 525 tractors and 250 trailers.

In 2016, Haney Truck Line generated revenue of $80 million, compared with annual revenue of $105 million for Wilson Logistics, Wilson told Transport Topics in an interview on Sept. 6.

Wilson said he expects to upgrade the equipment in the Haney fleet and grow the business in an area where there is strong economic growth and “not a lot of competition.”

“We have the customer base to support it,” Wilson said, citing demand for heavy-haul and high-cube freight hauling from beverage shippers, paper and packaging and construction firms.

The company is also a contractor for the U.S. Forest Service and hauls equipment to firefighters currently battling blazes throughout the Western United States.

Peter Carlander, the former CEO of Haney Truck Line and whose grandfather founded the company in 1923,��will continue to work for Wilson Logistics in an unspecified “upper-management role,” Wilson said. Haney Truck Line will be re-branded as Wilson Logistics Pacific Northwest.

Included in the purchase of Haney’s assets are about 50 office workers and 350 drivers.

“The Haney team looks forward to joining the growing Wilson Logistics family,” Carlander said in a statement. “We will be able to bring our specialized service offering to the existing Wilson Logistics portfolio and provide all our customers with improved service.

“Haney will allow Wilson Logistics to enter the heavy haul transportation segment through Haney’s loyal customer base and specialized equipment and expertise,” he added.
