Consumers using Walmart Inc.’s online services experienced outages earlier Dec. 30, leaving them unable to access the retailer’s mobile ordering tools.
More than 6,000 customers reported they were unable to use the app or website around 7 a.m. in New York, according to data collected by the website . About 70% of those problems were linked to the mobile app, while a quarter flagged issues with the website.
During the outage, a high volume of users that the app was down and they were unable to complete orders.
Reports of problems declined significantly about an hour later — a sign that the issues were resolved.
Downdetector also reported some outages for Microsoft Corp.’s Azure, which is a cloud computing service . That outage followed a similar pattern to Walmart’s.
Walmart and Microsoft didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.
The company has made significant investments in its e-commerce capabilities in recent years as it seeks to compete with Amazon.com Inc. and other retailers, with fast fulfillment being a key part of its strategy. Last quarter, Walmart reported U.S. digital sales grew 28% from the prior year. Companywide, e-commerce represented 22% of total quarterly revenue.
