Wabtec broadened its digital rail capabilities by buying Frauscher Sensor Technology Group, aiming to pair its portfolio with technology designed to strengthen safety, capacity and efficiency for rail operators.

The Pittsburgh-based company said the acquisition expands its Digital Intelligence business with train detection, axle counting and wayside object control systems used across global rail networks. Frauscher’s products support operators in more than 100 countries.

“This strategic acquisition is another step in executing Wabtec’s long-term growth strategy, which will provide enhanced value for our customers, shareholders and employees,” Wabtec President and CEO Rafael Santana said in the announcement. He said merging Wabtec’s digital offerings with Frauscher’s technology opens opportunities in a high-potential market and supports profitable growth.

Wabtec bought Frauscher for 675 million euros in cash. The company said the deal is expected to be accretive to its growth profile, adjusted earnings before interest and taxes margins and adjusted earnings per share in the first year, with accretive return on invested capital over time.

Frauscher, founded in 1987 in Austria, has more than 700 employees across 15 countries. Its presence in Europe and India aligns with Wabtec’s targeted international growth regions.

“As the world’s rail network looks to meet the ever-growing transportation demands, the combination of our digital portfolio with Frauscher’s technology will provide operators innovative solutions to optimize their operations,” said Nalin Jain, president of Wabtec’s Digital Intelligence Group. He said the acquisition strengthens Wabtec’s role in the industry’s digital transformation.

Frauscher is forecast to generate about 145 million euros in revenue for 2025.
