Trucking Finds New Ways to Prevent Driver Fatigue

| Staff Reporterxecutives with some of the nation’s largest carriers said they were having some success preventing driver fatigue by having open discussions with their drivers and incorporating new software.
Tom DiSalvi, director of loss prevention at Schneider National Inc., said the company stresses to its drivers what they can do to combat fatigue, since fatigue often plays a crucial role in contributing to highway accidents.
DiSalvi said Schneider has focused on preventing drivers from experiencing “microsleep” — a term that refers to a condition where a part of a driver’s brain goes to sleep even while his eyes remain open.
