LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Both carriers and drivers lose financially from driver turnover, according to studies conducted for the Truckload Carriers Association.

Research by the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute at North Dakota State University found it costs truckload carriers an average of $8,234 to replace a driver. A survey by Highway Bound magazine reported that truck drivers lose more than $100,000 in potential earnings over a 30-year career in moving from carrier to carrier.

The studies, released March 19 at the TCA annual meeting here, are part of the group’s year-old emphasis on common management problems in the truckload sector.

“This is one of the major problems in our industry,” Ronnie Dowdy, chairman of the driver recruitment and retention panel, said about the focus of discussions that lasted nearly three hours and included the unveiling of the studies.
