A study by a shippers’ group found that railroads could benefit by as much as $500 million over the next six years by allowing increased competition and taking a few other steps.
The Alliance for Rail Competition offered that assessment in pushing for legislation to increase competition. Members, mostly bulk shippers, also advocate eliminating railroad bottlenecks and allowing switching in terminal areas.
Diane Duff, executive director of the two-year-old organization, said such actions could result in substantial growth in profits for railroad companies in the United States.
“This analysis demonstrates that the railroad industry will not lose profits, as railroad representatives claim,” she said Sept. 10 during a speech to transportation executives at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.
